EQUALITIES

Everyone is entitled to be treated with dignity and respect. The ability to live and work without prejudice is a fundamental right, regardless of your background, identity and experiences.

One of UNISON’s main aims is to help workers fight for fairness and equality in the workplace and beyond. Challenging discrimination and winning equality is at the heart of everything UNISON does.

LGBT+

Remembering LGBT+ history – and those who are struggling today

LGBT+ History Month is more important than ever, as the pandemic adds to the isolation felt by many LGBT+ people as a result of their gender identity or sexuality

LGBT+ History Month 2022 is Here!

LGBT+ History Month, observed in February each year, is a chance to increase visibility and celebrate the lives and achievements of our diverse LGBT+ community.  UNISON looks back on our own LGBT+ history to see how far we have come, remind us of the progress made in pursuit of LGBT+ equality, and to recommit to the campaigns ahead.

UNISON recognises the importance of its LGBT+ members and its responsibility for paying particular attention to our needs: that LGBT+ rights are trade union issues.

UNISON’s commitment to equality and to tackling discrimination is written into the union’s rules. But this support for LGBT+ rights has not come out of thin air. It is the consequence of many years of work and lobbying by our activists. Their work, collectively, is the legacy on which we all continue to build. We thank and think of them as we look back, and forward.

This year to celebrate LGBT+ History month Walsall Branch is holding an online showing of the presentation LGBT+ History Month 2022:

LGBT+ Walsall Branch

LGBT+ at Walsall Branch has supported Walsall Pride for many years. In August 2020 we held a virtual Pride featuring photos of previous Prides around the West Midlands region and a message of support from the West Midlands Region General Secretary.  The LGBT+ members group works with all parts of the union to improve equality, fight discrimination and prejudice in the workplace and provide support for our members.

Members meet as a self-organised group at branch, regional and national level.

Branch groups

There is a developing network of branch LGBT+ groups which meet to:

  • discuss local terms and conditions;

  • build a support network for members facing problems at work;

  • provide a forum for the debate of issues;

  • assist members in gaining the confidence to get involved in other levels of the union.
